The winner of the Helen Hill Animated Joy Award for 2008 is Chantal Tardiff for her project Hair Comes Trouble.
Hair Comes Trouble is an autobiographical assemblage of whimsical and humourous animated vignettes reflecting on the adventures of daily life using the thematic focus of Chantal's unmistakeable, trademark hair. Each vignette takes advantage of varied animation technologies from traditional hands-on two-dimensional work to cellphone video.
The project emerged as the artist's response to remarks that "I resemble a cartoon character because of my distinctive mane, which has become one of my defining characteristics."
Chantal's first animated work, My Own Private Hell, was well received and has been screened many times including the Atlantic Film Festival and at the Dalhousie Art Gallery. Her work includes kinetic sculptures, wearable art pieces, and installation and site-specific works, which have been exhibited at many venues including the Khyber, Seeds Gallery, and Eyelevel Gallery. To round out her career she is also a member of the rock band The Maynards. She is a graduate and Valedictorian of the NS College Of Art & Design.
